Hummus in Hollywood

Hummus is becoming more popular in American culture and not surprisingly it is appearing more and more often in many television sitcoms and TV shows, and in Hollywood movies. Here, we list an array of past and present films that mention "Hummus." (Only those suitable for family viewing.) We'll even highlight a link to a review when available.

Help us build the library. Send us information on any film that includes a mention of Hummus. Mail to: Hummus in Film

"DATE MOVIE &#$! (Bomb)" (20th Century Fox, Feb. 2006). Third in the trilogy by co-directors and writers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, of the "Scary Movie": Alyson Hannigan ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") plays Julia Jones. Her father (Eddie Griffin) runs the family's Greek restaurant, toting a spray bottle full of hummus (in lieu of "Greek Wedding's" Windex), which he sprays on her mole, because, he says, hummus cures everything. (Griffin is black, and it's supposed to be a wonderful gag that the whole family is of Greek, Jewish, Indian, African and Japanese ancestry, but it yields only insipid ethnic jokes.) Read a review?

"WAR OF THE WORLDS" (2005) Tom Cruise, Justin Chatwin and Dakota Fanning star in this Steven Spielberg remake of the HG Wells Classic. During one scene before the Aliens attack, Ray Ferrier (Cruise) sits down with his daughter Rachel (Fanning) and starts to eat from a dish of hummus. Surprised, he asks her what it is and she points out it's very healthy. If you watch carefully during the "hummus scene," you'll notice that Rachel sits on the couch and crosses her left leg over her right. In the next view, from the table, her legs appear reversed. "HUMMUS CURRY: THE MOVIE": Hummus Curry offers an intimate look into the lives of the local Indians living in a small village packed with Israeli tourists. Up in the Himalaya Mountains resides the village of Bhagsu, the rainiest place in all of India. During the hard winter the rain never stops & Bhagsu does not get a whiff of tourism. Kala Kumar (28), feeling bored, spends the slow monsoon days with his family, doing little within the fresh brick walls of his new guesthouse. Get more information?

"HUMMUS FOR TWO": 30 Minutes, Hebrew, Arabic, English Subtitles, Colour 1997. With all their disagreements, one of the few things Israelis and Palestinians see eye to eye on is their love of Hummus - a creamy paste of chickpeas; it is a national culinary favorite. The film sets out on a voyage in search of the perfect Hummus, between the two parts of Jerusalem - the Arab East and the Israeli West Side. Jerusalem’s never looked this delicious.
